State renews order to combat congenital syphilis

SANTA FE – After New Mexico saw syphilis rates drop for the first time since 2018, the state is renewing aggressive testing requirements to sustain that progress and protect newborns from preventable deaths.

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is extending its public health order originally established in 2022, continuing expanded statewide syphilis testing.

“Congenital syphilis is entirely preventable, so our continued focus on testing and treatment is saving babies’ lives and protecting families,” said Janine Waters , sexually transmitted disease program manager for NMDOH. “This public health order targets interventions to reverse one of the most challenging public health threats.”

The order directs medical professionals to continue syphilis testing for all individuals aged 18 to 50 across New Mexico and, among other measures, test pregnant individuals during the first and third trimester and at delivery.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that can lead to significant health complications. Syphilis transmission from mother to child, known as congenital syphilis, can result in significant birth defects, and fetal or infant death

In 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranked New Mexico second-highest nationally for both congenital syphilis and primary/secondary syphilis. The state made significant progress in 2024, with primary and secondary syphilis rates dropping 31% and congenital syphilis rates decreased 19.6%. Primary and secondary syphilis rates, however, remain twice the national average.

This public health order takes effect immediately and will remain in force until one year from the date of issuance or until the NMDOH Cabinet Secretary rescinds it. Providers and members of the public who have questions can contact NMDOH Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833-796-8773).
