Statewide cold weather warning issued for New Mexico

SANTA FE — A winter wave of cold weather is expected to hit much of New Mexico over the next few days.

Weather Forecast Highlights:

Northern and Central Regions (including Albuquerque and Santa Fe):

Highs between 35-45°F starting Wednesday.

Lows dropping to 15-25°F Thursday and Friday, with wind chills making it feel even colder.

Snow accumulations of 0.5-1 inch in lowlands, and 1-3 inches in mountainous areas.

Winds of 25-35 mph with hazardous wind chills and low visibility.

Southern Regions (including Las Cruces and Roswell):

Highs: low 40s; lows near 25°F.

Scattered snow showers with light accumulation.

Winds up to 35 mph.

Eastern Plains (including Clovis and Hobbs):

Highs 32-40°F; lows between 19-25°F.

Snow showers and freezing rain are possible, causing slick roads.

Strong winds may increase wind chill and reduce visibility.

The New Mexico Department of Health urges residents to prepare for health and safety risks.

Public Safety Guidance:

Protect People and Pets

Dress in heavy layers and use wool or waterproof gear if possible.

Watch for cold-related symptoms like shivering, numbness or confusion. Seek help if needed.

People most vulnerable to extreme cold are infants, the elderly, persons with chronic illness, outdoor workers, and the unhoused.

Bring your pets indoors and make sure that they have warm bedding.

Prepare Homes and Vehicles

Safely heat your home and check smoke/carbon monoxide detectors.

Keep emergency supplies and blankets in your vehicle if traveling.
