UNM leader Dannelle M. Kirven named to head New Mexico MLK, Jr. Commission

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Following a unanimous vote, the New Mexico Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission has appointed Ms. Dannelle M. Kirven as its new Executive Director, ushering in a dynamic new chapter for the organization's civil rights and community engagement work across the state.

Kirven, a New Mexico native and respected leader within the University of New Mexico's African American Student Services Department, emerged as the standout candidate from a statewide search that began last November. Her selection came after rigorous interviews conducted during the Commission's public meeting on March 14.

"Dannelle Kirven brings exactly the vision, energy and deep community connections we need at this pivotal moment," said , Little V. West , Chair of the New Mexico MLK, Jr. Commission. "Her proven track record of educational outreach and advocacy will transform our ability to advance Dr. King's principles throughout every corner of New Mexico."

The extensive search process attracted exceptional candidates through a multi-platform recruitment campaign. After evaluating all applicants, the Commission's Search Committee narrowed the field to three candidates, with two finalists advancing to the final interview phase.

Kirven's appointment represents more than just new leadership—it signals the Commission's renewed commitment to expanding its impact beyond traditional programming. Under her guidance, the Commission plans to launch innovative initiatives that address contemporary civil rights challenges while honoring Dr. King's enduring legacy.

"This Commission stands at the intersection of history and our present moment," Kirven said. "I'm honored to lead an organization that can bridge these worlds by creating meaningful dialogue and action around equality, opportunity, and justice for all New Mexicans."

Kirven will officially assume her role on April 14, 2025.
