LAS CRUCES, NM – The first-ever winners of the New Mexico Heritage Short Film Contest were recognized at the Las Cruces International Film Festival’s (LCIFF) Poster Reveal Party on March 6. The winning films will be screened at the LCIFF from April 8-12.
These filmmakers were inspired by their cultural heritage and shared stories through contemporary filmmaking.
Winners “Napigsa ti Angin / The Wind is Strong” directed by Tony Marquez 1st place: Best Over All movie short

Best Originality
This family friendly film that teaches about some of the Filipino history in New Mexico and helped contribute to the New Mexico agriculture industry.
“It felt very validating to have our Filipino NM Heritage story win first place!” Producer Lava G. Khonsuwon said. “Often folks are unaware of Southeast Asians in New Mexico. The contest felt like a great opportunity to share one of our stories. Our team is truly grateful and over the moon to have won first place! We appreciate that the NM Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum held this contest so that New Mexicans had a chance to share their heritage. Thanks to Contest Director Eric Kirker and the folks at NM Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum.”

Siblings discover their family's heritage through their grandma's stories on a desert homestead that is shaped by memory, land, and legacy.
"Winning second place for “What the Wind Remembers” was incredibly exciting for our family,” Hali Aleczandra said. “Both kids said the experience was ‘so amazing,’ and having this film about our family heritage recognized means so much, especially since this was River and Sky’s first film experience. We are truly honored to receive this award and grateful to share our story."
“Back Burner” directed by Kcenia Gwaltney 3rd place: Best Over All movie short
Camila discovers community after her abuela passes.
“After many script revisions, and with a lot of help from the local filmmaking community, I submitted ‘Back Burner’ proud knowing that I did my best,” Director Kcenia Gwaltney said. “When I got the email saying that we got third, I was ecstatic! I was so happy to see that all of our hard work was recognized. I am so thankful for my family and friends for helping and supporting me throughout my journey. We can’t wait to see ‘Back Burner’ on the big screen, and what awaits us in the future.”
