Wildfire Notification – Otero and Alamo Fires

The New Mexico Forestry Division would like to update you on two wildfires that are requiring the attention of suppression resources in New Mexico.

Otero Fire

Update: The Otero fire is 364 acres and is zero percent contained. The fire was discovered at 5 p.m., Sunday, April 27 in the bosque area east of Socorro. Response crews were able to staff the fire overnight and put in containment lines on the fire’s north side. This morning, there is still fire activity on the south side; interior heat remains on other portions of the fire from grass and brush fuels. Operational plan for today is to hold and strengthen containment lines. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Evacuations / Closures: None at this time.

Structure Threat : None.

Weather: Currently 61 degrees, 15% RH, north winds at 8 mph. Today, highs near 79. North wind 10-15 mph becoming south 15-20 mph in the afternoon. Tonight, lows around 42. South wind 15-20 mph becoming north 5-10 mph in the evening.

Alamo Fire

Update: The Alamo Fire is estimated at 3-5 acres and is 100% percent contained. The fire was discovered at 7:21 p.m. on Sunday, April 27 in a neighborhood on the east side of Grants, in Cibola County.

Winds pushed the fire into a residential area with structures, burning several, along with outbuildings. This morning, the fire’s progress is under control and no longer a threat. Operational plan for today is managing structure impacts and to grid the wildland area for hot spots. GPS will also be performed on the fire to get an accurate acreage total. The cause of the fire is under investigation. This will be the final notification on this fire unless there are significant changes.

Evacuations / Closures: Yes. Residents who live on the North Side of East Sage Ave. are being allowed back into their homes. Due to the ongoing fire investigation and emergency personnel still on scene, no vehicles will be allowed. Residents on the South Side of East Sage Ave. are not permitted back to their homes at this time. Fire personnel are still on scene while the fire investigation is ongoing.

Structure Threat : 6 structures and 8 outbuilding burned, per Grants Fire and Rescue.

Weather: Currently 43 degrees, 24% RH, north winds at 5 mph.
